Chongqing

Chongqing has been on my list of must-see places for a while now. I first heard about this megacity (like everyone else probably has) from YouTube and Instagram reels. I saw it advertised as “China’s Cyberpunk City”, sprawling with neon lights and a night scene unlike anything else in the country. Brushing aside the hype, Chongqing has cemented itself as one of my favorite cities to date. Impressive skylines accompanied by contrasting lifestyles of the locals fight for dominance in an increasingly urbanized environment. Meanwhile, a bowl of local Chonqing-style noodles serves as a unifier, bringing peace and stability (if not for a moment). I am attracted to contrasts more than anything else. If I had to give my own definition for what “Chongqing” meant, I would call it “The place that contrasts among itself”. The theme of my project was to highlight the contrast between the locals and their environment in a progressing China. Chongqing was, by far, the crown jewel. I hope you like what you see.
