The “Black and White” Project
By Stephen Nicholas Abel

My first full-length photography project
Focusing on the connection between people and their environments is a topic that draws my attention time and time again. I wanted to create a body of work that highlighted the way people in modern-day China live in what is now the world’s second-largest economy. I wanted to showcase a sort of “old vs new”, to show aspects of the rapid development this country has experienced in the last 4 decades of its economic miracle.

All the photos you see on this page were taken during a 26-day timespan. Not long enough to complete a full-length photography project, but I made the most of the tools and time I had. Having less time and cheaper gear forced me to take bigger risks that paid off. Nevertheless, here is my work from my almost month-long trip to China.
I hope you like what you see.
